Able Abby Fana Hosting Sarapan Di Mana?
It is job commitment and enthusiasm that endear Abby Fana to listeners and viewers of her programmes. Abby Fana. Her name brings to mind that distinctively clear and chirpy voice chatting with listeners on Sinar FM. The slender Abby also graces the TV screen in Malaysia Hari ini on TV3. Her latest offering has her sharing a scrumptious breakfast with village folks in different parts of the country on Sarapan Di Mana?, that airs on Astro Prima.
In person, the 41-year-old comes across as friendly, warm and highly engaging. “I can say hosting can be a very fulfilling vocation; just like writing is to you,” said Abby who hails from Muar, Johor. Her involvement in the broadcasting industry started in 1987 when she was studying at Institute Teknologi Mara (now called University Institut Teknologi Mara/ UiTM).
“I was accompanying my friend, an aspiring TV host, to an audition. I wasn’t interested because I was very shy. “I was quietly seated in a corner when a female producer came to me and said sternly, ‘Do your turn now and don’t waste my time here,’” recalled Abby with a laugh. That’s how Abby, whose real name is Habsah Omar, got started.
She hosted the weekly show, Nada Budaya (1987-1988) on RTM, before taking a break to raise her family. She was back in the limelight in 1993 and has Pembangunan Usahawan, Selamat Pagi Malaysia to her credit. “I do believe that if you want to be a good presenter, both on TV and radio, you have to start from the bottom. “I was doing news reporting when I joined MetroNews (the now-defunct MetroVision) in 1995 as a broadcast journalist, before becoming senior producer in 1997. It provided really good training because it gives you a sense of urgency and how to spot newsworthy material,” said the single mother of two teenage boys.
In the same year she started her radio stint with THR as a news presenter and editor. It was three years later that she braced herself to try out deejaying in the morning show, Cik Seri Pagi aka Miss Morning Glory. During her tenure at THR (1997-l 2005), she was also the assistant manager for programming. “I have learned a lot and I fell in love with radio deejaying while working at THR,” said Abby who was named one of the finalists for Most Popular Radio Deejay (for Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian) for five years (2004-2006) though luck hasn’t been on her side yet.
Despite the change in scene, Abby thoroughly enjoyed her time with Sembang Sinar on Sinar FM since joining the station in 2006.
“In Sembang Sinar, I have the freedom to pick the topic for the day. As my programme is between 10am and 2pm, I need some cheerful topics to talk about to get listeners engaged throughout.” On her co-hosting Malaysia Hari Ini, Abby said: “Whenever I have to co-host MHI, which is twice a week, I would get up as early as 3.30am and make it a point to be on the set by 5.15am.”
But what gets Abby really excited at the moment is her new show Sarapan Di Mana? “I remember when the production house, One on One Productions Sdn Bhd, approached me to host Sarapan Di Mana? they were a bit apprehensive, thinking that I would decline.” But Abby gladly accepted. The good thing is the recording of Sarapan Di Mana? is done during the weekend, so it does not clash with her other commitments.
“This show focuses on what senior citizens and people in the countryside do during their leisure and what their routine is after breakfast. “It may sound strange but I’m really excited being involved in the show as I love entertaining senior citizens. It is rejuvenating to be out in the field, meeting warm and friendly people from rural areas. “I must say that it is a new and exciting experience for me. I really have to make sure that (hosting Sarapan Di Mana?) I do not slack in my other job commitments,” said Abby, adding that she’s working hard towards having her own talk show.
“It sounds clichéd (to want to have my own talk show), but it took me 20 years to gain enough confidence and experience to be where I am today and I have submitted the proposal (to the production house). I will wait and see what happens next,” she concluded.
