YOUNG actor Raffi Ahmad was 90 minutes late for the interview. He apologised for being late and commented on how tired he was, having just flown in from Jakarta at 11 that morning and being sent straight to a meet-the-fans session at a shopping centre in Subang, Selangor.

Raffi was in town with co-stars Irwansyah and Acha Septriasa to promote Love Is Cinta. The movie revolves around close friends, Ryan and Cinta, who are in love but fail to express their true feelings until it is too late. Ryan is killed in an accident and his restless spirit enters the body of Doni. Through Doni, Ryan hopes to reveal his love for Cinta.

Directed by Hanny R. Saputra, of Heart (which also featured Acha and Irwansyah as the leads), the movie has all the ingredients to make audiences root for Doni. Love Is Cinta is distributed locally by RAM Entertainment and Grand Brilliance Sdn Bhd.

“When I first read the script I was bowled over,” said the 20-year-old.

“On top of that, I have nurtured for a very long time this dream of working again with director Hanny. I worked with him on an Indonesian TV drama series when I first started acting six years ago. I can’t even recall the title,” he said with a laugh.

“It was difficult to play the parts in which Ryan’s soul entered Doni’s body. It took me weeks just to get Ryan’s mannerisms right.

“Personally, I feel that this is my biggest and most difficult project so far. To play Doni, I needed to be sad most of the time. In most scenes in the movie, I was crying or feeling tormented.

“It was seven days a week, from 7am to 7pm daily, and it took us about 40 days to complete shooting the movie.

“I really hope Love Is Cinta will repeat Heart’s success here,” said Raffi, who is currently busy filming drama series Andainya Aku Tahu alongside Acha and Irwansyah for RCTI channel.

He has just completed Bukan Bintang Biasa (BBB), a feature which will be released in Malaysia, tentatively at the end of the year.

“I portray Cinta, a high school graduate who is a very independent and determined girl.

“When I first read the script, I fell in love with the character. Cinta is strong, independent and firm in her beliefs. I guess there are similarities between Cinta’s and my own personality.”

Acha added that even though this was the second time she had been paired in a movie with her boyfriend, Irwansyah, she found her role in Love Is Cinta more difficult compared to Hearts (where the pair played lovers).

“Unlike Hearts, where we have the freedom to express our feelings, in Love Is Cinta, I was required to suppress it.”

“I had fun acting in Love Is Cinta. Basically, my character, Ryan, is a mummy’s boy. He has feelings for Cinta but somehow finds it difficult to express himself. It was very difficult for him to say those three magic words,” said the 22-year-old.

“In the movie, because Ryan is very close to his mother, he agrees to further his studies abroad even though he is reluctant to do so.

“As my role wasn’t that big, I guess I didn’t have much difficulty playing Ryan. But all of us rehearsed with director Hanny Saputra for two months before we were ready to film.”

Irwansyah added that he would love to act in action movies but that would have to wait because the current craze in Indonesia are the horror and romance genres.
