zamil-idris-doreen-tang-tony-eusoffe-tunku-the-musicalPETALING JAYA: Tunku The Musical, the biggest production to date by the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac), will begin its three-week run tomorrow.

The musical is a tribute to Malaysia’s Bapa Kemerdekaan Tunku Abdul Rahman and depicts the “colour, drama, excitement, anticipation, heartache, sorrow and uncertainty” that ensued after the historical Hari Merdeka on Aug 31, 1957.

The musical is created and directed by KLPac artistic director Joe Hasham, who said, “Tunku is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest Malaysians. It is our gift to Malaysia on its 50th birthday, and I truly hope that everyone comes to see history being played out on stage.”

Though based on actual events in Malaysian history – Hari Merdeka, the May 13 riots in 1969 and the Singapore-Malaya separation – the story and characters in Tunku The Musical are fictional.

“The musical will give us an insight into the impact this great visionary has had on Malaysia,” said Hasham.

The cast of the musical includes Tony Eusoff, Douglas Lim, Syuk Ibrahim, Evelyn Toh, Maria Yasmin, Doreen Tang and Zamil Idris who will be supported by an ensemble cast of 46 and an 18-piece orchestra (playing more than 30 original compositions).

The Star is the sponsor for the opening night of Tunku The Musical.

Tunku the Musical runs from tomorrow until Sept 2 at Pentas 1 of the KLPac. Showtime is 8.30pm daily, except Sundays when it is 3pm.

Tickets are priced at RM80, RM60 and RM40 (students, disabled and senior citizens). For tickets or more information, call the box office at 03-4047 9000 (KLPac) or 03-2094 9400 (The Actors Studio) or visit www.klpac.com.
