Baek Ji Young Sex Video Scandal will Never be Forgotten
8 years ago, her sex tape was leaked. Now, man in video is arrested for sex crime in US.
In 2000, former celebrity manager Kim Seok Jin shot to notoriety after a sex video of him and his charge - K-pop singer Baek Ji Young - started circulating on the Internet.
He then fled to the US but made headlines again last week, this time for statutory rape charges.
Kim, 45, was arrested by the police in the Koreatown area in Los Angeles on suspicion of having sex with a minor aged below 18, reported Yonhap News Agency.
He is also known by the name Kim Si Won in Korea, although his real name is said to be Kim Seok Wan.
He had been on the US wanted list for two years.
A request for bail was put up but rejected by the US court last Tuesday, after US officials received an extradition request from the Korean government.
In his hometown, Kim Seok Jin is allegedly wanted by the Korean police for defamation charges related to the production and circulation of sex videos on the Internet, said The Chosun Ilbo.
The newspaper also quoted a Korean music industry executive who said ‘we have to wait and see if he (Kim) will be brought back home’.
So far, Baek Ji Young has yet to comment on the news.
Sources close to the singer told The Chosun Ilbo that she ‘may not want her name mentioned in connection with Kim since the sex tape scandal nearly ruined her career’.
Theirs was a scandal not unlike that which plagues Hong Kong actor Edison Chen and female stars like Gillian Chung and Cecilia Cheung.
TALK OF THE TOWN
Their sex photos appeared online in late January and have been the talk of the town since.
Over in Korea, Ji Young, 32, was last seen in public on 2 Feb, performing at a charity concert at Yonsei University in Seoul, reported My Daily.
Two days later, she reportedly underwent vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst that had caused her voice to break during performances.
She is now supposed to rest and not talk for three to four months, to allow her vocal cords to heal.
But Ji Young has been through worse trials and trauma.
Debuting in 1999 with a sexy image and a hit salsa single, she was soaring up the music charts when a sex video involving her and Kim was leaked on a pay-per-view pornographic website in November 2000.
Kim later admitted in a phone interview with a live entertainment programme on TV that he had filmed the video without Ji Young’s knowledge in his office in 1998.
Public outcry ensued and TV stations, radio stations and advertisers alike were quick to boycott Ji Young.
But instead of making herself out to be a ‘naive and silly’ victim and making a fast exit, the plucky singer put up a fierce fight to stay in showbiz.
Times Asia said she ‘defiantly vowed’ to continue singing ‘if a single fan wants me to’, and her resilient attitude won the support of feminist groups and others.
But it was not so easy to sway public opinion.
Severing ties with Kim who had fled the country, Ji Young managed to release a new album in the aftermath of the saga but failed to convince Korea’s three main free-to-air channels to lift their bans on her.
ADULT CONCERT
She went on a long break and in 2003, made a brief comeback by becoming the first Korean female singer to stage an ‘adult concert’.
As she was clad in incredibly skimpy outfits and performed risque dance sequences, only those aged 19 and above were allowed entry to her show.
In 2006, Baek Ji Young made a full comeback by ditching her sexy dance-pop image and crooning love ballads in her new album Smile Again, which ended up topping several music charts.
The TV stations finally welcomed her back, but the sex video incident continued to haunther.
‘I hope people only think of me as a singer when they hear my new song,’ she told The Chosun Ilbo then.
‘The scandal I was involved in will never be forgotten even when I’m very old, whether I succeed or fail, but it’s painful to hear people talk about it whenever something happens to me.’
She added that she felt ‘victimised’ and ‘desolate’, but managed to pull through with the support of her family and friends.
More recently, Baek Ji Young was under fire for a totally different reason.
Usually a revered fashion icon, she drew flak last year for donning a ‘giant broccoli’ outfit that won her a spot in the worst-dressed list.
At least it made people forget about her sex saga. Until now, that is.

I am not Korean, but I really love her song, her voice, her body. I cannot find the right words to express my support for her voice. I don’t understand why the public rejected her just for the sex; what is the rationale for scandal… It sounds stupid. She is not using sex to make her chart topped up. It’s her real gifted talent make her so popular.
Talking about her sex tape, I have tried my best to download the movie because I want to see her nice body. I also try to collect her photo as well. I don’t care what people say. She’s got good body. Instead of criticizing, I find her attractive.
There are three basic needs of human, food, rest and sex. Ji Young is a super star; however, literally, she’s human like all of those who rejected her. Why can’t she have sex? Who dare saying that they don’t love sex? The other thing is she’s not the one who make her tape leak. Even though she did it (suppose), who care? I do agree that it hurts those who think of her as a real perfect Asian girl. But it’s the old school thing and stupid belief or culture. Life changed, so should the culture.
