THIS Hari Raya brings new meaning for songstress Ning Baizura as she has her beloved fiancé Omar Sharif Christopher Layton Dalton to fuss over.

“I’m very happy to see Omar coping well with fasting.

During the first week he was rushing for food the moment we break fast, but for the second week he was handling it a lot better.

“Throughout the fasting month we have always managed to break fast together with my mother.

It is really important because I don’t want Omar to feel left out.

“My mother would cook chicken curry for him as it is his favourite dish. It is just sweet watching my mother fussing over Omar.

“I guess in a way, watching Omar reminds my mother of her early days as a convert many years ago.

“For the early morning meal (sahur), we would call each other up to make sure we do not oversleep and miss it.

“As for Raya preparations, I haven’t done much yet but I always do things in moderation. We did the shopping over the weekend at Bukit Bintang for our Raya clothes.

“We will spend the first day of Raya with my parents before visiting my big family (two older sisters and four brothers) with Omar,” said Ning, who is in the midst of preparing for her wedding next June or July.

HARI Raya, for actress-TV host Sheila Rusly and director husband Azman Yahya, has always been about their two sons.

“Our Raya preparations have been the same for many years. The only difference is that our sons are getting bigger so we need to spend more,” said the affable host when met at her cosy home near Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur.

Sheila said that she has done the shopping earlier in the month as her sons Uzair Haqimy, 11, and Luth Mikhail, six, are quite a handful to handle.

“We have done the shopping for everyone, including my in-laws, except for myself as I’m not worried about buying new clothes. Having nice and delicious Raya cookies is more important to me because we will have guests visiting during Hari Raya,” said Sheila, who loves cooking and has published three cook books.

“As for open house, we don’t have a specific day for it. Anyone can visit us anytime, but they have to inform us first to make sure that we are in. We also plan to have a different dish to be served on a different day. You know, like nasi beriani on Monday and laksa Penang on Tuesday.”

It has been a routine in the past years for the couple and their children to spend time with Azman’s family in Ipoh during Raya.

After spending the eve and the first day of Raya in Ipoh, the family will return to Kuala Lumpur to spend time with Sheila’s family.

As for the Raya preparations, the couple is more than happy to get some help from their children.

“They are very helpful when it comes to household chores, especially the older boy, who is very good, while the young one is more playful.”

It has been a practice for Sheila and Azman to take one month off from work during the fasting month every year to spend time with their children.

“We would take time off during Ramadan as our sons would be fasting. We want to give them moral support and motivation as it is not easy for the children to fast,” said Sheila, adding that for the past one month, the family has been performing Terawih prayers at a nearby mosque.

Nasrizal Ngasri

NASRIZAL will be celebrating Hari Raya as a husband for the first time. The 27-year-old who got married in March has things figured out. He will be spending an equal amount of time with both his family and his in-laws.

“During the day, we will go to my family’s house and then at night we will be at my wife’s home,” the cheerful young man said.

Nasrizal, who has been acting from a very young age, married Nurfahana Mahamad Fahri whilst filming Shuhaimi Baba’s 1957 Hati Malaya.

Since his wedding date was set much earlier, Nasrizal decided to go ahead with it. And although the director gave him time off, Nasrizal felt it was his responsibility not to miss out on the day of the shoot.

“After the nikah, I went straight to Dataran Merdeka for the night shoot. According to history, my character Sardon Jubir was at Dataran Merdeka when we celebrated our nation’s independence. If I wasn’t there, then I would have rewritten history,” he explained with a broad smile.

He said in jest that he left along with his guests after the majlis bersanding to continue working.

Nasrizal has just finished shooting a TV3 drama titled Kerana Karina. This would mean he has very little time to prepare for Hari Raya, but he is not too worried.

“My wife and I are planning a simple celebration with just two sets of baju Raya. But it definitely is going to be different for me from now on,” he said.
