KUALA LUMPUR: The “who’s who” of the entertainment scene attended the Royal Gala Screening of 1957 Hati Malaya at the Mellium Galleria in Suria KLCC last night.

Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the film’s royal patron, graced the occasion with Raja Muda of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah, Raja Puan Besar of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim Davidson, the Regent of Negri Sembilan Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja’afar and Tunku Puan Muda Negri Sembilan Tunku Nurul Hayati.

The film is about five young people – Salmi ( Maya Karin ), Hali ( Rusdi Ramli ), Rafik ( Adlin Aman Ramli ), Ani ( Sharifah Amani ) and Ang Lee ( Douglas Lim ) – who have been assigned to produce a picture book to commemorate the country’s 50th year of independence.

While conducting the research, they find themselves transported back to the colonial era and became involved in the momentous events leading up to Merdeka.

1957 Hati Malaya focuses on Tunku Abdul Rahman who became the first Prime Minister as well as Umno founder Datuk Onn Ja’afar.

Performing arts lecturer Mohamad Kamarulzaman Taib plays Tunku and Datuk Onn is portrayed by theatre actor Zaefrul Nordin.

The country’s two founding fathers, Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Tun V.T. Sambanthan, are portrayed by The Star’s associate editor Kee Thuan Chye and actor G. Nadarajan respectively.

Made with a modest budget of RM3.6mil, the story was put together based on limited archived historical papers and film footage.
