Ironically, comedian Afdlin Shauki takes on a most serious role in the comedy Cuci.

“Fairil is the natural born leader in the group and the most serious of lot. The others – Jojo, Khai and C’Tan –are comedians, but not Fairil, “ says Afdlin Shauki.

“There are some similarities between Fairil and me,” he adds deadpan.

“Though people tend to think of me as a funnyman, I can be very serious and focussed when it comes to work. I’m a no-nonsense kind of person when I’m chasing a dream.”

And you can’t argue with that. Afdlin has had a successful career as actor, director, producer, singer and writer. Among the movies he has acted in are Mimpi Moon, Soalnya Siapa?, Buli, Baik Punya Cilok and Sumo-Lah. He won the Best Actor award at the Malaysian Film Festival in 2001 and 2006; and in 2004, he took the accolade for Most Promising Director.

So was it difficult taking cues from director-friend Hans Isaac?

“Working with Hans as the director wasn’t a problem for me. I am an actor first, and being directed by others is not a big deal,” he says, adding that Hans managed to keep things cool despite the enormous pressure on the set.

“Things were so stressful that even a walkie-talkie and handphone were destroyed in the process!” Afdlin recalls, chuckling.

What’s on the horizon for the big guy? He stars in three movies this year – Cuci, Los and Faun, and Papadom.

Sure looks like Hans Isaac has come a long way since winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the Malaysian Film Festival in 2006. Over the last decade or so, Hans has acted in several movies, including Ringgit Kasorrga, Amok, Hanya Kawan, Buli, Cinta Luar Biasa and Qabil Khushry Qabil Igam.

Cuci marks his directorial debut. In the movie, Hans takes on the role of Khai.

“Khai behaves as if he is the youngest,” explains Hans about his character. He adds that Khai is so straight-laced that he starts delving into his family history on his first date.

Next up, you’ll see Hans in Afdlin’s Los and Faun.

AC Mizal, who plays C’Tan in Cuci is now a regular face on TV as he hosts AC DiSini every Friday on Astro Ria. Formerly from rap boyband 4U2C in the early 90s, AC later ventured into acting, dancing, singing and hosting after he left the band.

“My character, C’Tan, is the one with all the negative thoughts and ideas. Whenever the other brothers try to do something, C’Tan always comes up with the worst-case scenario. He obviously lacks confidence in himself,” says AC, revealing that he is a lot like C’Tan when it comes to self-esteem issues.

“It is a big problem in my life, and my wife has to keep encouraging me all the time!”

Look out for more of AC this year as he stars in Cicakman2 and Los and Faun.

Once a hard core rocker, singer-actor Awie seems to have mellowed with age and has no qualms about showing his softer side.

“My character Jojo,” he explains, “is the most feminine of the four brothers in the movie, in the sense that he loves cooking and cleaning up. Though he is a bit soft he can be firm when he needs to be.

“I guess Jojo’s character complements the other three – Fairil being the eldest and the one with the masterplan, C’Tan being the most stubborn and pessimistic, and Khai, the most straight-laced.”

Believe it or not, Awie says that he loves cooking and cleaning up in real life, too.

“I remember during my younger days, before Hari Raya, I would spend a whole week cleaning up my parents’ house, turning it upside-down! I still love cleaning up but nowadays I really have to be in the right mood before I embark on a clean-up job.”

Awie has been a mainstay in local movies from the mid-90s. With titles like Sembilu, Merah, Bara, Nafas Cinta, Zombie Kampung Pisang and Sumo-Lah under his belt, he will appear in three movies this year – Cuci, Duyung and Antoo Fighter.
