anjelica-lee-sin-jie-nyonyaMulti-award winning actress Angelica Lee Sin Jie is back in Malaysia to promote the charity screenings of her latest movie Road to Dawn. As a student, Angelica Lee Sin Jie used to take her secondary school drama group to Penang to watch competitions. Little did she imagine that, one day, she would be acting there herself.

Lee’s latest movie, Road to Dawn (Ye Ming) which was filmed in Penang, has brought her back to Malaysia from Hong Kong, where she’s based. She is presently involved with charity screenings of the film, which are expected will raise RM1mil to help the needy students of Wawasan Open University. A charity premiere of the film will be held on Sept 17 in Penang, while the gala event will take place in Kuala Lumpur the next day.

In a recent interview, Lee spoke about how happy she was to to work on a movie in Malaysia.

“Since I was so close to my hometown (Alor Star), I decided to play host and found out where I could take my co-stars to enjoy good food and the pretty sights in Penang. We even tried nyonya cuisine together during the shoot.”

anjelica-lee-sin-jie-winston-chao-road-to-dawnRoad to Dawn is the first movie that Lee has made in Malaysia. The Chinese historical drama is based on the story of Dr Sun Yat Sen’s revolutionary efforts and his love affairs while he was in Penang in 1910. The 125-minute movie features the famous Penang Conference, during which the Second Guang Zhou Uprising was mapped out.

The movie was filmed in various locations in Penang between Aug 3 and Sept 10 last year. There was no need for the use of studio or sets in this production as the settings and streetscapes in Penang, reminiscent of that era, have remained unchanged. Road to Dawn has won accolades at the 10th Shanghai International Film Festival. It grabbed the Media’s Choice Award, with Winston Chao winning the most popular actor award for his powerful portrayal of Dr Sun Yat Sen, and Wu Yue, the newcomer award for her sensitive rendition of Chen Cui Fen.

Road to Dawn has been nominated to compete in the Hua Biao Jiang Film Festival, which will be held later this month in Beijing. The film will also be shown during the Tokyo International Film Festival in October. Lee plays nyonya beauty, Xu Dan Rong, the young daughter of a Penang tycoon. While filming the movie, she learnt that she is actually of Straits Chinese descent, on her grandmother’s side.

Asked how she felt to be working with Chao, Lee revealed, “He’s very professional and very serious. He can get so into his character … he would wear his costume even when not shooting. It was as if he had actually become Dr Sun Yat Sen himself.”

“Immediately after the shoot ended, he shaved off his moustache, restyled his hair, changed his dressing and transformed back into Winston Chao. It was quite stunning.”

Looking fresh with her short, sleek hairdo and crisp white dress, the multiple award-winning actress quipped, “Audiences may recall from most of the movies I have made that I often portray characters that are decidedly mature and dead serious. So when they see me as Xu Dan Rong in Ye Ming, it will be such a refreshing change.

“Unlike Xu’s outspoken and exuberant personality, I am by nature somewhat reserved and not so complicated.”

Audiences are advised to look out for the romantic scene between Xu Dan Rong (Lee’s character) and Luo Zhao Ling (played by Zhao Zheng, a rising actor from mainland China ), which was filmed in the lush green setting of the Penang Botanic Gardens, and had been described as the “most romantic movie scene of 2007” by fans of Chinese website Sina.com.

Lee has been fondly referred to as the “Spook Queen” or the “Queen of Horror Movies” as a result of her starring in a string of horror hits, which began with The Eye, by the Pang Brothers. The movie won her three best actress awards: the Golden Horse Best Actress Award, the Hong Kong Film Festival Best Actress Award and the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Award. She also won the Best Newcomer Award at the Berlin Film Festival for her role in Betelnut Beauty.
