Daniel Wu Talks About ‘Blood Brothers’
It’s a new experience for Daniel Wu as he plays a country lad in Blood Brothers.
THE plot of new Chinese triad movie, Blood Brothers, revolves around the close relationship shared by three loyal friends. That kind of friendship is extremely close to lead actor Daniel Wu’s heart.
“I’ve been close to the same band of friends for almost 20 years now, so friendship is a topic that is very dear to me,” Wu said during a phone interview. “I think friendship is very important among guys. Unfortunately, youths these days don’t seem to think such friendships are important anymore.”
Directed by rookie director Alexi Tan and touted as “John Woo’s Return to Asia” (even though Woo is only producing the film), Blood Brothers is an action-packed triad thriller set in 1930s Shanghai.
It focuses on friends Kang (Liu Ye), Fung (Daniel Wu) and Xiao Hu (Tony Yang), who decide to leave their poor fishing village for the bright lights of Shanghai.
Once there, they are drawn to the temptations that the city has to offer and become caught up in a web of crime revolving around the infamous Paradise Club, owned by the powerful criminal overlord, Boss Hong (Sun Honglei).
As the trio becomes more involved with Boss Hong, his mistress Lulu (Shu Qi) and his right-hand man Mark (Chang Chen), each of them must make choices that will not only affect their friendship, but change their lives forever.
According to Wu, making the movie allowed him the opportunity to understand his own family history, as well as draw closer to his father, who grew up in the 30s.
“(While researching the movie) I asked my father about life in that era, and looked through all the old photos. That way, I got to know my family better,” he said, adding that he had to do some research on acting like a boy from the countryside.
“It was a bit hard for me because I grew up in the United States. I have no idea how a country boy in mainland China is supposed to act. I did some research, but most of it was based on my own feelings (for the role).”
Wu moved to Hong Kong from California in 1997 to begin his modelling and acting career. Since then, he has acted in high profile movies such as Jackie Chan’s New Police Story (for which he won a Golden Horse award for best supporting actor), One Night in Mongkok and City of Glass.
Last year, Wu directed the mockumentary, The Heavenly Kings, a spoof of the Hong Kong music industry, and won the Hong Kong Film Awards’ best new director award for it.
The involvement of Liu Ye (Curse of the Golden Flower, Orchid Island) and Chang Chen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2046) was the key to getting Wu on board.
“What attracted me the most (about the role) was the chance to work with actors who are about my age and have similar experiences as me.
“That’s why before I agreed, I made sure that the other two were on board first,” he said, adding that although he has never worked with Liu and Chang before, he admires their past work.
Wu also reckoned that working with this new band of brothers would be a lot easier because each of one could take care of himself.
“There was also no pressure on us because we are all experienced actors. I think it would have been a lot harder if I was working with new actors.
“Here, we knew what we were supposed to do,” he said. “Besides, I think only a new actor would be worried about trying to outshine the rest of the cast!”
# Blood Brothers is showing in cinemas nationwide.
