Detective Shu Qi In Forest of Death

Author: teropong | October 23, 2007 - 12:15 pm

shu qiShu Qi plays a detective who solves a crime with the woods as her witness in Forest of Death.

Forest of Death (Sum Yuen) presents an intriguing premise that the greenery in the woods can be witness to and assist in solving gruesome crimes carried out in their vicinity.

Taiwan-born Hong Kong-bassed actress Shu Qi, who plays the lead, offers her view in an e-mail interview in conjunction with the screening of the movie on Celestial Movies this month.

“I think it’s a very interesting idea. And, it would be so cool if it were true. I play a police detective who investigates a ghastly murder that took place in a mysterious forest, also a hot spot for several creepy suicides. As I trek deep into the spooky woods, I try to keep cool and calm while I figure out the eerie deaths.”

This crime-horror-thriller airing is a Hong Kong movie inspired by a Japanese novel, Forest of Suicide.

Directed by Danny Pang Fat (renowned for producing horror flicks with his twin brother Oxide Pang Chun), Forest of Death also stars Ekin Cheng, Lawrence Chou and Rain Lee.

shu qiThe story tells of rumours that those who enter the deadly forest will encounter all manner of mysterious happenings. Some even say that those who enter the forest never return, while others deliberately go into the forest to hang themselves!

In the movie, Shu is detective Ha Chun-chi, who takes over a case in which Patrick Wong (Chou) is suspected of murdering the Prime Minister’s daughter in the forest. The accused denies any wrongdoing; there is neither evidence nor witness to the crime.

With no leads, she enlists the help of maverick botanist Steven Shum Shu-hoi (Ekin Cheng), who proposes that plants have feelings and can communicate using their own language. Shum’s annoying TV host girlfriend May (Rain Lee) also joins their expedition into the forest. Having starred in the Pang Brothers’ horror flick The Eye 2 in which she portrayed a heavily-pregnant woman stalked by a female ghost, the luscious-lipped one was delighted to collaborate with Danny again for Forest of Death.

“This was the second time we worked together, and we had such a great time making this movie, too.”

In May this year, Shu declared open the 60th Cannes Film Festival together with 98-year-old Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.

Beaming her signature broad smile, she announced first in Mandarin then in English, “I now declare the Sixtieth Festival of Cannes open.”

shu qiSeveral months on, this unforgettable event at one of the world’s oldest, most influential and prestigious Film Festivals remains the sweetest memory to her.

“That was a great experience and an immense honour for me, as I knew I was the first Asian artiste to declare open the Cannes Film Festival.”

This interview with Shu was also held up as she was away in Milan for a fashion show for Italian fashion house Moschino. She has reportedly been invited to help them celebrate their new shop opening in Beijing next month.

Though already busy with her next project, she declined to disclose details, saying only, “I am currently preparing for my next movie.”

When asked what she imagined herself doing in 10 or 20 years, she simply replied, “I don’t think that far.”

Forest of Death will be airing on Astro’s Celestial Movies (Channel 322) on Oct 25 at 11pm. The movie is available in Mandarin and Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.
