Hong Kong actor Edison Chen has emerged as a surprise addition to the cast of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight, after he was seen on a shoot with Oscar-winning co-star Morgan Freeman recently.

The Canadian-born Hong Kong-based star will appear in a cameo role as a baddie.

Chen and Freeman filmed at landmarks like The Peninsula Hong Kong hotel and The Center skyscraper.

Batman star Christian Bale and Freeman had swooped into Hong Kong for four days of filming, causing chaos and some anger.

A shoot in the Central district was interrupted by crowds trying to get a glimpse of the caped crusader, and more than 100 policemen – most of them plain-clothes officers – were reportedly sent to control the crowds.

This drew the ire of director Johnnie To, who accused the Hong Kong government of supporting foreign productions more.

He said: “The government supports them 100% but doesn’t do it when we make a movie – not even 1%.”

The Batman producers also enraged environmentalists by asking tenants along a waterfront to keep their lights on all night during the shoot to illuminate the city’s skyline.

But Hong Kong’s Film Development Council chairman Jack So said: “It’s a very short-term inconvenience to our residents and local operators.

“The long-term economic benefits of having international studios shoot in Hong Kong definitely outweigh such short-term inconveniences.”

Previously, reports said a scene in which Bale was to drop from a plane into the Victoria Harbour was cut after producers found the water quality could pose a potential health risk.

But director Christopher Nolan said the scene was axed due to a script change.

“Once you see the finished film, you will understand why. As far as the pollution question goes, I honestly have no problem dumping actors in it,” he said. – Straits Times, Singapore/ Asia News Network
