Upcoming horror movie Anak pools the star attraction of actresses Erra Fazira, Ida Nerina and producer Soong Ai Ling.

Girl power rears its attractive head as Ida Nerina, Soong Ai Ling and Erra Fazira join forces in a local thriller called Anak, scheduled to spook moviegoers on Feb 21.

Anak marks the first time these three big names are working together. Ida and Erra, both award-winning actresses, play the leads in Anak, which is produced by Soong’s production company, Box Lite Film.

Working with Erra got Ida – whose last major role on screen was in 1957: Hati Malaya – really excited.

“I have watched Erra’s movies, and I know that she has more (in her) to show in terms of acting. She just needs the right director and the right script to push her further,” said Ida.

Anak is Erra’s first-ever thriller, something she has avoided for a long while. Erra’s last movie was Qabil Khushry Qabil Igam and she will soon be seen in Hans Isaac’s Cuci, both light-hearted fare.

“I wasn’t scared to act in a horror movie or thriller. But thrillers are not really the kind of movie that I would like to watch.

“I was offered a role in a thriller before but I declined it as I wasn’t ready then. In fact, when producer Michael Ang approached me with the script for Anak, I said no to him, too. But he persuaded me to read the script and think it through. I have to say that the moment I read the script, I liked it because this one is different,” said Erra, adding that it took several discussions with Ang before she finally agreed to take on the role.

Anak is about Nita (Erra) who tries to start a new life and decides to stay with her cousin Kay (Ida), after being traumatised by a dark past. It is in Kay’s home that Nita starts seeing a young child wandering around the house. Though at first Kay refuses to believe her, and suggests Nita seek psychiatric help instead, she soon realises that Nita’s trauma is somehow linked to her.

Joining forces

For Ida and Erra, working together will not be a problem. In fact, Erra has been inspired to work harder after watching Ida in action.

“When I first saw how Ida was working for her role as Kay, I wanted to give it my best shot too. Here’s someone who is so into her role and giving her best, I would not want to spoil the movie by working half-heartedly. It is about teamwork and I really like the experience of working with Ida,” said Erra.

Prior to filming – which took place in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam, Selangor, last April – the cast members went through one month of rehearsals with acting coach Fatimah Abu Bakar.

Budgeted at RM1.4mil, Anak also marks Soong Ai Ling’s debut as a film producer.

“After modelling for years and then producing the E! Life with Ai Ling TV series, I felt it was the right time for me to produce a movie,” said Soong.

She added that together with her business partner Ang, she went through several scripts before deciding on a thriller as their debut feature movie, and then roping in famed advertising director Barney Lee to direct.

Apart from the Ida-Erra-Soong drawing power, Anak also features Rusdi Ramli (who picked up the best actor award at the Malaysian Film Festival last August), Esma Daniel and Indonesian Philip Jusuf.
