Full House To Watch Tunku The Musical
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a full house at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) yesterday, and fittingly so.
The 500 guests did not want to miss the premiere of Tunku The Musical, which gave them a further insight into how Merdeka had changed the people’s lives through the hopes, aspirations and sacrifices made by the nation’s Founding Father.
Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director and group chief operating officer Datin Linda Ngiam paid glowing tribute to the Tunku, who had served as chairman of The Star from 1974 until his demise in 1990.
“To me and my colleagues, the Tunku was part of The Star family. He not only gave us advice and support but he was also our very influential and popular columnist.”“He spoke courageously on issues and concerns of society and the nation, and therefore many thought and still think that STAR stood for Suara Tunku Abdul Rahman,” she said.
The guests included Singapore High Commissioner T. Jasudasen, Yayasan Budi Penyayang chief executive officer Datuk Leela Mohd Ali, KLPac executive producer Datuk Faridah Merican and artistic director Joe Hasham.
Also present was The Star group chief editor Michael Aeria.
The musical depicts the “colour, drama, excitement, anticipation, heartache, sorrow and uncertainty” that ensued after the proclamation of Merdeka by the Tunku on Aug 31, 1957, and is based on actual events in Malaysian history. The story and characters in Tunku The Musical are fictional.
The musical runs until Sept 2 at Pentas 1 of the KLPac. Showtime is at 8.30pm daily, except Sundays (3pm).
Tickets are priced at RM80, RM60, and RM40 (students, disabled and senior citizens). For enquiries, call 03-4047 9000 (KLPac), 03-2094 9400 (The Actors Studio) or visit www.klpac.com.
