Love and Honour (2006)
… read it here

Yoshino’s Barber Shop (2003)

In a picturesque Japanese rural village where there’s only one barber shop, the local boys are required to sport the “Yoshino Cut”, a bowl-shaped style that is never going to be featured in Tokyo’s trendy fashion mags. However, when Yosuke, a transfer student, arrives at the village, he bucks the status quo by refusing the signature cut. He dares to break “tradition” by sporting trendy locks and fashionably dyed hair. The local boys soon begin questioning the community’s insistence on clean-cut looks.

Infection (2004)

The troubles of a cash-strapped and rundown hospital are made worse when a patient dies as a result of a doctor’s negligence. With their backs already to the wall, the panicked hospital staff covers up the mistake. But secrets don’t stay hidden for long; the cover-up starts a deadly chain of events. When a paramedic brings a seriously ill patient to the same hospital one day, it seems like an ordinary case. However, the virus is so deadly, and its effects so horrible that it soon develops into an epidemic. And how strange is it that the doctors involved in the cover-up are starting to behave strangely?

We Shall Overcome Someday (Pacchigi!) (2004)

The deep enmity between South Koreans and the Japanese is illustrated in this Romeo and Juliet-ish movie about a clash between two high schools. It’s 1968 and the Higashi High School Karate Club clashes with a gang of delinquents from a high school for resident South Koreans. In the midst of this chaos, Kosuke from Higashi High falls in love with Kyong-ja, the sister of Ang-son, the leader of the Korean delinquents. All Kosuke wants to do is learn to play the guitar and impress the girls (especially Kyong-ja), but the bitter rift between the two communities is a tough barrier to overcome.

Linda Linda Linda (2005)

Three girls decide to make a splash at the upcoming school festival by forming a rock band. Unfortunately, three days before the festival, their guitarist leaves because of a “hand injury”. Nozomi and drummer Kyoko soon find a replacement: keyboard player Kei. But the group is still missing a vocalist! Desperate, they snag Song, a Korean student who happens to walk by. Never mind that Song can barely speak Japanese. Can this band, slapped together at the last minute, make any kind of impact at the festival?

The Milkwoman (2005)

Minako makes her living running up and down a steep slope delivering milk and working as a supermarket cashier when that job is done. The 50-year-old spinster, however, has been harbouring a crush on one of her customers since high school: Keita, who lives with his terminally ill wife Yoko. While Minako struggles with unrequited love, Yoko worries about her husband who not only cares for her but works in the local municipal office. Despite his turmoil-ridden life, Keita insists that he desires nothing but an “ordinary” life.

Kamome Diner (2006)

Two Japanese ladies – both struggling with personal problems – begin helping out at Kamome Diner, a Japanese restaurant in Helsinki, Finland. The owner, Sachie, also hails from Japan, and the three ladies discuss tasty food, such as the restaurant’s specialty, onigiri rice ball, and each other’s problems as they run the restaurant. There are many customers to serve and each comes with personal issues of their own as well. This, of course, keeps the ladies very busy.

Hana (2006)

In 1702 Japan, revenge killing is a way of life and Sozaemon, a country samurai, is one of many on a journey of vengeance. Sozaemon wants Kanazawa Jubei’s head for killing his father, but the task takes longer than expected. He decides to bide his time at a tenement in Edo. And as he gets to know the people there, including beautiful widow Osae, he begins to contemplate a life without revenge.
