John Abraham was not the first choice for Vivek Agnihotri’s film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. Saif Ali Khan was the original choice for John’s role.

“Yes, I had Saif in mind at the time of writing the script. Usually when you start a film, you have various options in mind and they don’t necessarily work out.

Saif Ali Khan was busy and John Abraham has an athletic body. He played football in school,” he says.

When asked what inspired him to make a sports film, especially when the genre does not have a huge fan following in India, he says, “I don’t agree with this thought.

Maybe the sport is not popular in cities, but in villages, children grow up playing a lot of football. I believe a movie can either be good or bad and people love to watch good movies.

Chak De! India was a well-made film. That’s why it was appreciated by the audience.”

Vivek was surprised at Boman Irani’s knowledge of the game. “Yes, when I planned to cast Boman in the role, I realised that his knowledge of the game was amazing.

It became easy because he knew the nuances of coaching and managing the team. Boman was excellent in his role,” he says.

The director was very modest about his knowledge of football. He says, “I have never played the game, but yes, I enjoy the sport.

I feel that sports is the most neglected genre in films. I was always frustrated with this negligence and that frustration has been reflected in my film.”

Vivek’s next film is based on global warming. “The subject is very awe inspiring,” says Vivek.
