KUALA LUMPUR: Actress Maya Karin hopes to educate the public on deprived street children through her latest film Anak Halal (Legitimate Child).

She said the movie provided an insight into the realities surrounding the lives of such children who were isolated by society.

“It’s an action movie which highlights the dangerous elements of drug abuse and culture clash of a bunch of teenagers from different backgrounds living in a modern city,” she added.

Maya plays the character of a tough and rebellious Jo, who is brought up by her single mother Bu Leha and is forced to sell fruits at the Chow Kit market to eke out a living.

“This is my first role as a young, rebellious and tough street kid. It is very different and definitely a departure from my usual sweet-faced roles in movies,” said Maya, who graced the movie’s premiere on Thursday night at GSC Mid Valley.

“This role is something I’ve always wanted. As Jo, I do not need to wear make-up and dress up. I am simple and plain. It was definitely a good experience,” she said, adding that she had to pick up guitar and motorcycling lessons for the role.

The popular actress urged the public not to be too judgmental and biased against such children.

“Just because they grew up in a less-fortunate environment it does not mean these children are a bad influence,” she said.

Director Osman Ali said the movie would instil in audiences a sense of importance in providing guidance and education to teenagers.

“It will also help society realise that it is not always best to blame teenagers when they get involved with drugs or social problems, but to try and understand the issues involved,” he added.

The movie, which also stars Farid Kamil and Fasha Sandha, will hit the silver screen on Dec 13.
