akon HE’S pleasingly peculiar, but Senegal’s hottest export Akon has fans eating out of the palm of his hands, a trend the hip hop artiste developed right from the get go with his 2003 multi-platinum debut album Trouble. The hit single Locked Up propelled the singer to the upper echelons of stardom but greater triumphs are coming his way at the moment.

If Trouble was Akon’s ode to redemption, the latest chapter in his music career, his second full-length album Konvicted (released in 2006) picks up at rebirth, and is expected to effectively place him at the top of the hill. The tunes on Konvicted are largely self-penned works by the artiste but a whole slew of big name celebrities have put their hands into the musical cookie jar as well, with the likes of Eminem and Snoop Dogg - no less - making significant contributions to the proceedings.

This collection of songs were conceived from Akon’s wellspring of musical influences, ranging from sources as varied as Stevie Wonder to Steely Dan. But in the mix of this musical menagerie is a definite sound that is Akon’s alone. And it’s this material that the multi-talented artiste will be plying at his upcoming show on Aug 19 at the Perdana Lakeview East, Cyberjaya, sharing the limelight with a spectacular display of fireworks courtesy of the Malaysia International Fireworks Competition.
