Remember Malaysian Idol? No? Well, the talent show may be history, but the second and last Malaysian Idol, Daniel Lee, is still going strong, and has made the most of his jumpstart to fame.

While his second album, Unavoidable, serves up the usual Mandopop fare of pop songs and ballads, it’s Lee’s vocals that make a difference. He sounds a lot more polished and smooth than on his debut. Lee’s forte is ballads that allow him to show off his trademark falsettos and it is no surprise that almost the entire album is filled to the brim with such songs. The standout songs are Love is Under the Sky and Running Out of Time. This was probably a wise move as the two non-ballads (opening hip hop flavoured number Because of Love and Devastation) are slightly less inspiring.

Overall, it’s not a bad follow-up to his debut, and his fans should lap it all up. Lee also gets my vote for the most considerate Chinese-language singer ever, as the album includes a little booklet of lyrics in Chinese han yu pin yin (phonetics), for the benefit of his non-Chinese educated fans.
