Jacky Cheung: By Your Side
With young male Chinese singers now a dime a dozen, hearing Jacky Cheung’s distinctive voice again is almost like meeting an old friend. One of the last of the Golden Age of Chinese music, when talent reigned over packaging, Cheung sounds as good as ever.
Unfortunately, Cheung is let down slightly by the selection of songs on this particular Mandarin album. It’s the singer’s class and pedigree that prevent a forgettable album. Cheung hits the “hip” button on the opening cut, throwing in some rap in the midst of the up-tempo delivery, which sounds a little bit odd, to say the least.
The ballads fare much better though, and one of the more outstanding songs is Long Time No See, which is penned by Malaysian singer-songwriter Yi Jie Qi. His cover of the Teresa Teng classic Dan Yuan Ren Chang Jiu (Hope to Live Forever) is also one of the classier songs here, as is the title track.
Get this to whet your appetite while waiting for his concert in September.
