Jacky Cheung World Tour Concert
It was a great Jacky Cheung concert from start to finish.
What an explosive concert Jacky Cheung’s World Tour in Hong Kong turned out to be!
I was at the 12th of 18 sold-out concerts held before Hong Kong Coliseum’s 9,000-strong crowd and the atmosphere was electric.
Originally scheduled to end its Hong Kong run last month, another three performances were added due to overwhelming response.
Opening the show with fiery pyrotechnics and slick dance moves, was a Jacky Cheung we had never seen before. Ngoi Fo Fa (Sparks of Love) and Tau Fat Luin Liu (Messed Up Hair) had him dancing till he was bathed in sweat.
“Some people might ask why, at my age, I would want to open my concerts by dancing so vigorously to such fast numbers. It’s simple really, I just want to dance for you while I still can.”
Singing Mandopop number Yi Qian Ge Shang Xin De Li You (1,000 Sad Reasons), then his very first Cantopop hit Cheng Yi Sai (Love Is Gone), he strolled over to the right wing near where I was seated. Excited fans surged to shake his hand and there I was waving madly at him, with a pen in one hand and a notebook in the other.
Howling like a banshee at intermittent intervals, Cheung was like a man possessed, by a wolf spirit, nonetheless. So infectious was it, his adoring audience soon joined him with roars of approval.
After he belted out Cantopop-rock number Ngoh Long Chuin Shuit (Legend of the Hungry Wolf), Cheung revealed how singing helped him relieve stress and made him feel much better.
Then, to everyone’s concern, the God of Songs (gor san) started to cough. “Excuse me while I cough, but don’t worry I won’t cough while I’m singing.”“I have been singing for more than 23 years and have released some 70 albums. But, my proudest achievement was in 2004 when I released Life Is Like a Dream. It was neither my most popular nor my best-selling album, but all the songs were written by yours truly, and that was a milestone for me.”
Included in this album are songs the happily-married family man wrote for his most beloved women; Yiu Yiu (Lullaby) for his eldest daughter and Gong Nei Ji (Letting You Know) for his wife, May Lo.
With his shiny metallic suits, sparkly diamante shirts, spiky silvery hair, and sizzling hot dance moves, he had the audience eating out of his hands.
Doing his version of dirty-dancing to Hong Se (Red), he declared, “Those moves I did, well, I meant to show you my sexy side,” to which the concert hall rocked with laughter.
Spinning and posing with some of his slick moves, he added, “Yeah, I know. I haven’t even shown you everything and you’re all already laughing, as if sexy has got nothing to do with me.”
Another highlight of the night, as he had promised earlier, was the 30-minute musical drama with songs and selected elements from both his award-winning musical film Perhaps Love (Ru Guo Ai) and critically-acclaimed stage musical Snow Wolf Lake (Shuit Long Wu).
He dramatised the romantic musical with a medley of his Mandopop songs like Shi Fou Zai Lian Ai (Are We in Love), Ai Shi Yong Hen (Love is Forever), Ni Shi Ai Wo De (You Love Me), Ming Yun Qu (Destiny’s Song) and Ru Guo Ai (Perhaps Love).
During the encore, singing Jan Ching Lau Lou (True Love Expression), as he was stepping backwards, he stumbled and nearly fell.
For the encore, he serenaded fans with Cantopop hits like Lei Hoi Yi Hao (After Leaving), Ngam Luin Nei (Crush on You), Wan See Gok Dak Nei Jui Hou (Still Feel You’re the Best) and Yuet Boon Wan (Crescent Moon), and Ju Fu (Blessings).
Thousands in the concert hall joined him in crooning their all-time favourite Jacky Cheung tunes.
The last song, Ju Fu (Blessings), was particularly emotional for everyone. There was not a dry eye in the concert hall as memories flooded back. Towards the end, his voice became a bit hoarse and somewhat dry, understandably so after singing for 12 days without a break.
At one point, his emotions got the better of him and coupled with the strain of spending months on tour, his voice cracked on a high note. Shaking his head, he continued, spurred on by an appreciative audience that sang louder still.
It was a show to remember. And yes, Jacky Cheung, you have made me your fan all over again.
Having been to the United States, Canada, China, Macau, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore andIndonesia, Cheung will be making his way to Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and China.
