John Huang Jun Yuan: My First Album
With the exception of an elite few, the majority of singers in the Chinese music scene sound almost the same, and sometimes seem to be singing the same songs as well.
Case in point: John Huang Jun Yuan’s My First Album. It starts off well with the nice and promisingly uncomplicated On the Way, but quickly returns to the well-worn track of love songs and ballads.
As far as debut albums go, this one doesn’t stand out very much. It’s really not Huang’s fault – his vocals are actually not bad – but the fact that the songs all sound similar works against him. The most memorable song in the album is not even an original composition, being a retool of the classic Jeff Chang song, Ai Ru Chao Shui.
Here’s hoping the producers of his follow-up album spend more money in making better and more original-sounding music, rather than focus on putting as many pretty pictures on the album sleeves as possible.
