Old and new vie for top prize in song at the 22nd Anugerah Juara Lagu.

Due to the controversy from Faizal Tahir baring his chest recently, he won’t be appearing at this year’s 22nd Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL).

(Faizal Tahir has been banned by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission from participating in live or delayed telecast concerts on any TV station for three months.)

Thanks to the hullabaloo, AJL – which had been fast losing its initial shine – got some much-needed attention.

Even without Faizal Tahir, however, the song contest seems to be shaping up as a battle between veteran singerwriter- lyricists and local music industry newcomers.

Still in the game

While the singers vie for Best Performance and Best Vocals awards, there is also stiff competition for the song categories. Songs are divided into three broad categories – Ethnic Creative, Ballads and Pop/Rock.

It’s usually the ballads that end up dominating the show, but this year, one shouldn’t discount the ethnic creative category as a star-studded line-up looks set to steal the show: Aishah sings Kasihnya Balqis (composed by Adnan Abu Hassan, with lyrics by Mohariz Yaakup), Ramlah Ram takes on Dirgahayu (penned by Eddie Hamid and lyrics by Hairun Anuar Harun) and Nora puts her melodious voice to work on Samudera (composed by Johan Nawawi, lyrics by Ahmad Fedtri Yahya). In the past, Aishah has twice performed the winning AJL tunes: balads Janji Manismu in 1990 and Cinta Beralih Arah in 2005.

Now, 12 years later, she is back with a Kasihnya Balqis, her first foray into the Ethnic Creative segment of the show. The song laced with religious undertones is taken from Aishah’s latest album, Kurnia, which was released last year.
