Asao Miwa, From Beach to Idol
Japanese volleyball star Asao Miwa (浅尾美和) is a Japanese athlete who has star appeal.
With her gravure idol looks, this 21-year-old 172cm tall, tanned, beach volleyball star from Suzuka in Mie prefecture has sold over 40,000 copies of her photo book released earlier this year making her more popular than many bikini gravure idols today.
Miwa is part of professional beach volleyball pair including 25 year old Nishibori Takemi (西堀健実) which is ranked 56th in the world.
With her star appeal, she has been modeling and appearing on Japanese TV and almost single handedly raised the popularity of beach volleyball in Japan.
However, there have been recent rumors that if the pair don’t qualify for the Beijing Olympics, Asao Miwa will become a full time showbiz talent.
The rumors haven’t stopped Asao from concentrating on volleyball and she started playing on the World Tour last season and made it past the qualifying round for the first time this season in Espinho, Portugal.
