Korean American Uproar Towards Oprah Plastic Surgery Comments
Queen of daytime talk show Oprah Winfrey (pic) remarked that Korean women have “an obsession with plastic surgery” during a recent episode of her popular The Oprah Winfrey Show.
This has sparked an uproar in the Korean-American community and some Korean expat groups are demanding a public apology from the talk show host.
The particular program dealt with women’s rising positions and female culture in various countries.
Mexico’s bold and stylish fashion was highlighted, along with the struggles of women in Ghana, Cuba’s passionate club scene as well as the relaxed and confident style of American women.
In the segment dedicated to Korea, Korean women were portrayed to have an inferiority complex with many turning to plastic surgery for more Western features. It also described Korea as a plastic surgery superpower.
A Korean student studying in the US said: “The Oprah Winfrey Show is a program with a lot of viewers worldwide, and for it to deal with Korea negatively like this is a big problem. Because of this, I worry if the nation’s image takes a big hit.”

Just a heads up, this story is nearly four years old. It was bumped to the top of the Chosun Ilbo page by a concentrated effort to deflect attention away from a pair of Nazi-themed commercials running in Korea.
http://briandeutsch.blogspot.com/2008/04/korean-americans-complained-about-oprah.html
Just because it didn’t cause a big storm 4 years ago, it’s a non issue? The problem with most people is that if it doesn’t offend them personally, they have a tendency to say,”get over it” after all it’s just a fringe minority that doesn’t have a voice in this country. All of you making comments, “IT’S TRUE!” without having watched the show are exacty the reason why media and government can manipulate the masses. You have no idea the content of the show nor in what context the comments were said. It’s not a matter of weather or not the plastic surgery comment is true or not, that is beside the point and that is not why the apology is requested. If you watched the show, it is without a doubt a slam against the koreans. The reason why the show was so offensive (and i’m one of the few on this board, if not only person that has watched the show in question) is not so much because of Oprah’s comments at the end of the segment, which were offensive as well when she talks about how she can’t imagine altering her looks because it would change her essence(HELLO! YOU STRAIGHTENED YOUR HAIR! WHY?), but more so BECAUSE THE WHOLE SHOW WAS ABOUT THE CELEBRATION OF WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD!!! Each country’s segment had a representative FROM that country, usually someone attractive, well off , and happy with their lives. Each country had someone that spoke english talking about how great their lives were. I forget how many countries there were, but Korea was one of the last segments and when it came to Korea, the tone of the show took a drastic turn as it became more of a documentary on plastic surgery. They had Lisa Ling, a Chinese-American, interviewing korean women in the back alleys of korea. With so much going on in the Korean entertainment industry, you couldn’t find one Korean to represent KOREA?! I watched it four years ago and i wrote an e-mail to the Oprah show voicing my displeasure and of course i never got a response back. The reason why there was no furor over this is because Koreans in this country do not have a voice. No polical clout and much like other minorities that don’t have voice, we will always be drowned out by the whites who say,”Get over it!” Can you imagine if this was something offensive to blacks? or whites? the whole country would be in an uproar.
p.s. Brian, you are an idiot!
hey man i totally agree with oprah korean and asian women are very obessed with face plastic surgery. i mean im korean american and when i did visit korea the first thing my family said you should get your eyes done youw ould be so much prettier! its true they just dont want to admit it. im glad i didnt get my eyes don elike majority of the korean people even my uncle in korea got them very sad! korea is weird i like certain things of korea but the surgery is a bit much i agree with oprah!
korean stupid whole worlds know 40% of the adults done plastic surgery..
who said it racism, jamm you are right..
i like korean entertaiment, i saw almost 70% entertainer done plastic surgery
maybe Except comedian
korea is the only country which it’s woman magazine has plastic surgery clinic commercial on it’s woman magazine..
have seen that in other country,, i believe each country many people done plastic surgery but korean is the most
Just look at her general comments about Asians and who she supported during the presidential election. She is clearly racist. I have met “African Americans” in the UK, who have issues with Koreans in the US. When I heard the reasons I realised just how warped and victim-complex drievn they are…they said they disliked Koreans because Koreans did not like them. I researched further to look at the cause and effect…Koreans have issues since the LA riots in the 1980s, when African Americans targeted Korean stores even though they were allegedly rioting because of things the authorities had done.
We had the same issues here in Birmingham (UK) in the 1980s, when Afro-Carribeans attacked South Asian shops because of alleged problems with the police. It does not occur to them that these Asians would then label them as losers an dislike them. Instead they yet again use the victim excuse as to why they are not liked. Ruining the businesses of people who started with less than them is not remembered as the cause of the dislike!
Unlike the authorities and the general population in the West, other ethnic groups do not have to pander to these self-serving excuse makers. Education is free in the UK and all ethnic groups started with nothing in the 1950s and 1960s BUT one group could integrate (Christian values and language). They had a much better chance relative to other new comers in the UK and screwed it up. That should be used as a yardstick for when the whinging occurs in the US i.e. the only difference as to why Asians have done well is values, NOT opportunity.
It is possible to find superficial people obsessed with surgery in many countries (including Korea). Japan (we had plenty of documentaries in the UK about the Japanese having surgey, in the 1980s) and large parts of the coasts in the US come to mind. Funny how that is not noticed (Japanese people I have met in the UK actually deny they even do it!). I would also like to know what they said about Venezuala…long considered a place obsessed with Miss World and cosmetic surgery.
Oprah was playing race games but the general populace did not and does not realise is.
But it’s true. The majority of Korean celebrities have underwent plastic surgery to make their nose and eyes look more Western. There’s no need to make it into a black and Korean issue. My best friend is black and dating a Korean woman - blacks are not out to get Koreans.
Instead of being upset at her comments, why not actually admit that there may be some flaws in society in Korea. There are flaws in every other society, no one is perfect.
TRUTH””””’That’s why their children don’t look like their parents, PLASTIC SURGERY””””””””””””””’
Once again, you dumbasses saying that it’s true, that is not the point. It may be true I really don’t know but the point is why have a show about the celebration of women in various countries and highlight the positive aspects of women from each country using a native of each country and then for Korea they take an ominous back alley documentary approach using a non-native. Clearly a show with an agenda.
P.s. Brian you are an idiot!!
the west is desperate to monopolize beauty around the world. oprah is a mouthpiece for the white elite. you’re absolutely right there was an agenda. the fact that they used the handpicked southeast chinese lisa ling (who would later marry a tall handsome korean) to represent koreans is apparent that they had an agenda.
korean entertainment is gaining cultural influence and east asian entertainment will one day supplant theirs. they are just simply trying to curb it by making the viewers believe that the beautiful men and women coming out of asia are all trying to be white so as to sustain white supremacy in terms of entertainment. they are nothing but hypocrites because western stars get more botox and plastic surgery than any other entertainment industry in the world and they still look like crap.
It is estimated that at least 76% of the koreans’ general population got plastic surgeries and 98% of its celebrities got plastic. Korea is the highest among any asian countries and they deny it. Korean plastic doctors say they have 10X the experience of other countries, sot hat mean that are 10X the rate of united states, brazil, sweden, and so on. That is really high. S. korea have the highest per capita of plastic surgeries clinics/hospital in the world. Some have from 10 to over 100 plastic doctors working there. Most work long hours and some work on weekends too. I have never seen so many ugly duckings than in korea. Many get a total face change and it is very painful especially they do the jaw and cheek bone reductons producesure. Northeast asians which mean koreans have too much bones on their cheeks making their face look flat. They do jaw reduction to make a “V” shaped chin. It is crazy. Right now it is like 8 out of 10 koreans in s. korea between 14 and 18 get plastics. Lot of it too.
Yes, unfortunately everyone is racist somehow. However America is in the eyes of the world. So everything she says will be echoed. Hongkong and Japan, even the webster’s dictionary once defined the Philippines as a country of maids. did that ever go international?? no, they didn’t even ask an apology. so stop B*tchin’ for in the end we only fight against ourselves. Instead let us just try to accept every person as a human being not a race. We shouldn’ even be worried about whether we’re asian, black, white or latin. we’re all human and we all make mistakes. Like jack says there maybe flaws in every other society. Chill guys, i have 9 ethnicities in me, almost every racial statement applies to me, so ya’ll can imagine how i used to feel. In the end it’s all BS all opinions. Lets get over it..
I am korean. I don’t know why koreans are denying the obvious. Korean parents ask their kids to have comestic plastic surgeries. Many are getting it done by `14 the latest. Over 50 of my family members and extended family members got comestic plastics. All got double eyelids & nose. But others got way more such as jaw reduction, nose bridge implants, forehead implants, and chin implants.
I am a Korean American female who is beyond disgusted with the percentage of Korean women getting the same plastic surgery, especially eyelid surgery. I plan to write a thank you letter to Oprah for saying what is the true–Korean women are ultra-insecure and have an inferiority complex.
Korean people are so brainwashed about the plastic surgery that if I say that it is ridiculous they say, “Oh, you are just jealous.” The fact is I would never get any of those popular plastic surgery procedures done even if it was free performed by the top surgeon in Korea.
Lol this is so true every korean friend i know had plastic surgery
and when i went to south korea u can tell who had a nose job or a face lifted so much plastic surgery their. they shouldnt be blaming Oprah for that they should be blaming themselfs for being rude lol
